Introduction
Collecting and studying license plates can be a fascinating endeavor. It helps us gain some additional understanding of social history in places around the world. Examples include how certain annual issues of Michigan license plates were colour-coded to reflect the colours associated with Michigan universities, the virtual “tulip mania” in Delaware associated with low-number plates, and how, in 1987, the Republic of Ireland completely changed the format of its license plates to reflect its integration into the European Union (and, not incidentally, the increasing numbers of new vehicles being registered).
